Hyacinthine Macaw

Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus

This is a bird of Brazil, eastern Bolivia, and northeastern Paraguay. It's one of the largest parrots, with length which reaches 1 m. (39"). It has a very strong beak, even for a parrot, and can chew almost anything! It is an endangered species, with fewer than 4000 individuals left.

The picture was taken at the Indianapolis zoo, in August 2000.
