Black Rhinoceros

Diceros bicornis

Black rhinos have two horns, exactly like the other African species, the white rhinos. (The second horn is a bit hard to see in this picture because of the boulder in the background.) Contrary to what their name suggests, both species have similar color. Black rhinos can be distinguished by their pointed upper lip, which is square in white rhinos. Black rhinos have poor eyesight, and they can be unpredictable, often charging against humans or human vehicles. This picture was taken at the Chicago Brookfield zoo, in May 2000.
