Thirteen-lined Ground Squirrel ("Striped Gopher")

Spermophilus tridecemlineatus

The thirteen-lined ground squirrel can be found in most areas of N. America. It is omnivorous: besides seeds and vegetables it also eats caterpilars, insects, and even small birds, when it gets the chance.

The above picture was taken at the Brookfield Zoo of Chicago, in May 2000.
